Trapping lightning bolts - a new innovative idea

We know that,all over the world people are starving for electricity.The most abundant source is the thunder bolts.But we cannot hold them,the only way t avoid them is earthing.
Now my question is that,can't we use a portion of earth as a capacitor to hold lightning? that means,a huge area,may be hectors of land,dig them at their boundaries up-to a level so that its whole boundary is insulated with high technology,and use that piece of as a huge capacitor and use the available technology so and so to retrieve the source.How is it?

Even we have to consider the earth.While digging we have to remember about the equilibrium of whole earth,and the passages of rain waster under earth must no be harmed.
The idea though if possible,must need a great study with vast criteria.
