I have heard it,but never tried.
We can use dried or green leaves to reduce the evaporation of water from the top soil in the summer season. I tried the same thing with. Some haystack like dried grass and fortunately it worked well.
Previously, whenever I watered my plants, the soil will soon dry within hours. Then I shifted my watering time to night,so that the evaporation will be low.
But still ,during the day time,I felt terrible to see plants without any freshness.
My mother once told me,we can use haystack beneath this plants,so that the soil won't get direct contact with sunlight and hence reduces the evaporation.
Finally ,I worked.
Similarly today I tried, with dry leaves. There was a big tree, shedding dry leaves to the terrace of my house. Last day while cleaning, I just grabbed the best and good leaves, bought them down and arranged them below the plants.
Now its double.protection. This combination can now sustain the terrible summer.
